Multiple areas of Delhi showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals 10x the recommended threshold established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe levels.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that covers the metropolis as the cold season begins.

However recently, the recently formed city administration appealed to the supreme court to seek a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Health and Economic Consequences

The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple research.

This pollution causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k premature fatalities per year in Delhi.
