Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
